What is Red Light Therapy?

Red light therapy (RLT) is a type of treatment that uses wavelengths of red light to possibly improve many medical ailments as well as refresh cells and enhance your skin’s appearance. RLT falls under the umbrella term Photobiomodulation–which is the technology of using wavelengths of light for therapeutic purposes. RLT uses wavelengths of light measuring 600-700 nm (short wavelengths) that superficially penetrate the skin, with most of the energy absorbed in the first 2 centimeters of the tissue.

How Does RLT Work?

The red light from a handheld device, red light mask, or red light bed is placed near or in contact with the skin, allowing the light energy (photons) to penetrate tissue. The red light encourages the mitochondria in the cell to produce more energy. With more energy, the other cells in your body can work more efficiently, such as repairing skin, boosting new cell growth, and enhancing skin rejuvenation.

Interestingly, recent research indicates that light can enhance performance in normal tissues and cells.

What Are the Possible Benefits of RLT?

Research is ongoing for red light therapy and much of it is promising, however many more studies need to be completed in order to absolutely say that RLT can provide absolute benefits. Listed below are possible benefits of RLT based on the research and studies that have been done thus far, RLT may:

  • Enhance skin appearance (fewer wrinkles, fine lines, age spots, and improved acne)
  • Improve wound healing
  • Reduce inflammation
  • Diminish chronic pain
  • Improve hair growth
  • Boost mood

Is RLT safe? Are there any side effects?

Red light therapy is approved by the FDA. It is non-invasive, non-toxic, and painless, and no side effects have been shown. Some topical skin treatments, like laser therapy, are very hard on the skin–RLT is not! Proper eye protection should be worn when using RLT as the light may damage the eyes.

What will an RLT Treatment Feel Like?

While RLT treatments are painless and non-invasive, if you’re using an RLT full bed, you may feel some warmth from the bulbs. Remember that RLT increases circulation, so you may feel general warmth in your body from this as well. Many people report feeling very relaxed and calm after an RLT treatment.

What Should I Do After My RLT Treatment?

Your cells will be hard at work after a red light therapy session, so it is essential to drink lots of water after a treatment! Water helps fuel your cells for all the work they are about to do.

How Often Do I Need to Complete RLT?

The answer to this question is not the same for all people. Everyone’s skin is different and depending on the results you are seeking from RLT, the amount of time you spend with the treatments will vary. Treatment sessions are usually 20 to 30 minutes, but the number of sessions you’ll need depends on each individual person.

Know that achieving lasting results will take time and patience. Incorporating RLT into your routine is a way to achieve the benefits it may have to offer.

Are At-Home RLT Devices Safe?

There are many RLT devices available for the general public to purchase. Everything from handheld wand devices to full red light beds is accessible online to buy. Know that the wavelength strength of the red light in each device will vary.

Red light therapy is approved by the FDA, however, RLT devices are cleared by the FDA which means the devices are generally safe to use. By choosing FDA-cleared medical devices, you are assured that there is a reasonable assurance that the devices are safe and effective for their intended uses.
