What is HRT?
As men and women age, they face declining hormone levels. It’s an inevitable product of the aging process.
Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a regimen that is used to mitigate the common symptoms that occur when there is a hormonal imbalance in the body. Many people think of hormone replacement therapy as a method to ease the symptoms of menopause, but men can also benefit from HRT.
What is the difference between HRT and TRT?
TRT (testosterone replacement therapy) is a form of HRT. Testosterone levels begin to decline after the age of 30 in most men. TRT is used to treat low testosterone and bring the level back to a threshold that allows symptoms of low testosterone to decline or disappear completely.
Testosterone replacement therapy can benefit men in the following ways:
- Increase muscle mass
- Lower body fat
- Increase energy and sex drive
- Weight loss
- Reduce the risk of developing common age-related conditions
How does HRT help with menopause?
During menopause, the levels of estrogen in a woman’s body decline sharply. Low estrogen levels can lead to a host of uncomfortable symptoms including hot flashes, night sweats, sore breasts, low energy, mood swings, and insomnia. Low estrogen levels can also lead to bone loss and osteoporosis.
Hormone replacement therapy brings estrogen levels back up to a level in a woman’s body so she is no longer experiencing these symptoms.
What age should I start HRT?
In general, most people start looking into HRT when their symptoms begin to appear. It is appropriate to start considering HRT or any anti-aging treatment as early as age 30.
Even if you don’t start treatment at age 30, it can be helpful to get an understanding of what is going on in your body early so you begin to consider the things that will help you to maximize your longevity.
Only a blood test will determine if your symptoms are related to a hormone deficiency.
What are the risks associated with HRT?
Hormone replacement isn’t suitable for everyone. Those suffering from prostate or breast cancer or any other type of cancer are not appropriate candidates for HRT.
Risks can include heart disease, breast cancer, blood clots, and stroke. Studies suggest that risks vary depending on health history, the type and dose of hormone therapy received, and age.
However, according to the Women’s Health Concern, despite some potential risks associated with HRT, “it remains the most effective solution for relieving menopausal symptoms and is also effective for the prevention of osteoporosis. It may in certain age groups provide protection against heart disease.”
